Costa Rica Law requires mandatory insurance from the rental agency; learn to find out which are required and which are possible bait and switch.

When your car agency is named, contact them directly to find EXACTLY what is included in the reservation. More important, what is not included in the reservation. If they REQUIRE an additional package or refuse to allow you to use properly documented Credit Card insurance coverage; cancel and move on to another in the search results. Look for the numeric satisfaction score in your search results; Brilliant/Magnificent/Excellent is best. Be sure to add any free additional drivers when making your online reservation here.

Agencies can and do mark up the TPL, but usually not more than the $13-25 per day, depending on the car. Its the other insurance packages that could add SIGNIFICANTLY to your rental surprise, $25-45 PER DAY on top of the TPL Your best judgement for your own situation and comfort when selecting auto rental insurance is required.

Our third party vendors normally allow you to use your properly documented Credit Card insurance. NOTE: it must be PRIMARY coverage and must be in the name of the card members who’s signing the rental agreement. This normally requires a security deposit of approximately $3,000 + be held on your credit card until the car is returned. You can find out what will be required by clicking the T&C or Terms & Conditions link in the rental window. Use your smartphone to video or capture the walk-around for each ding and detail listed on your agreement before leaving the agency.
